At the heart of Matsubayashi Hosai XVI‘s practice is kirei-sabi, the aesthetic sensibility inherited within Asahiyaki, which unites refined, luminous beauty with a plain, primitive one — a sensibility he seeks to rearticulate through his own experience as an artist living in the present, rather than preserve as a fixed style.

Mae Engelgeer unveils a sensory dialogue with Japanese art and craft heritage, in duo show with Matsubayashi Hosai XVI. Spazio Nobile presents a new, highly collaborative body of her work that bridges contemporary art and design with centuries of Japanese craftsmanship. From historic bamboo craftsmanship and paper lantern making to advanced woodworking and textile weaving, Engelgeer has collaborated directly with Kyoto’s most revered master artisans.
