Uji clay, wheel-thrown, white slip, poured Geppaku glaze made from rice-straw ash; fired in a traditional noborigama climbing kiln using split pine wood
22.3 x 17 x 15.8 cm (8.78 x 6.69 x 6.22 in)
Unique piece, accompanied by a tomobako (custom wooden box), inscribed by the artist
A flower vessel in the signature poured-geppaku style of Hosai XVI. In this mode, kirei sabi—Asahiyaki’s traditional aesthetic—is expressed with a sharper contemporary contrast. The crisp aqueous blue of the poured geppaku glaze, the primitive presence of the clay, and the white slip that binds these elements together resolve into kirei sabi.
