A chawan in Asahiyaki’s traditional Kase style. Uji clay aged for years yields, through the pine-wood flames of the noborigama climbing kiln, a compelling, wholly natural mottled pattern; the distinctive surface—evoking a deer’s back—emerges from the rare probabilities within the kiln met by the maker’s accumulated experience.
