Omote Bamboo Obi

Omote Bamboo developed in collaboration with cc-tapis, woven in a narrow format that echoes the elongated form of a Japanese obi. The design draws from bamboo selected from leftover and stock materials from Takesada Shoten in Kyoto, translating this natural resource into a contemporary textile composition. This custom version introduces a check pattern referencing traditional painted surfaces in Japan, such as fusuma panels, while its structure translates the woven logic of Japanese tatami. These elements are brought together and reinterpreted in a new spatial and material language. The rug is hand-knotted at the cc-tapis atelier in India, where skilled artisans translate the design through refined textile craftsmanship. Through this process, the work brings together Japanese craft heritage and contemporary production, exploring material continuity and the relationship between structure and surface.
