Benikase and Kase clays, nerikomi construction, wheel-thrown, thinly ash glazed to retain the texture and colour of both clay bodies, fired in a traditional noborigama climbing kiln using split pine wood
7,8 x 11,5 cm (3.07 x 4.53 in)
Unique piece, accompanied by a tomobako (custom wooden box), inscribed by the artist
A nerikomi work in which two clays—Benikase as the base and Kase—are worked together within a single chawan, expressing Hosai XVI’s ongoing concept of harmonising two distinct elements through the two bodies of clay. A thin glaze application produces a texture unlike a conventional glaze surface. The shifts of colour on the interior are especially worth close attention.
