Desire Utensil Container is the first solo exhibition of Swedish artist Åsa Jungnelius at Spazio Nobile, presenting new sculptures in glass, marble and metal, as well as iterations of recurring objects in her artistic practice. All the works have been created “site-specific” for the gallery. Existential questions are addressed through the materiality of glass and marble, each representing a different technical approach and state of mind. In the process, new entities have emerged into this world, some recognisable, bearing traces of everyday utensils, others ephemeral, reminiscent of the corporeal. In the centre of the exhibition a symbol of rebirth has been placed, a piece of raw purple Egyptian porphyry. Earth / Jorden and Desire are glass sculptures formed following the movement and gravity of the glass. Jungnelius explores the limits of the material and what the human body can control. This physical process is at the heart of the artist’s practice, the transformation of a territory into an object of desire.
Desire Utensil Container marque la première exposition personnelle de l’artiste suédoise Åsa Jungnelius chez Spazio Nobile. L’exposition présente de nouvelles sculptures créées en verre, marbre et métal, ainsi que des variations d’objets récurrents dans sa pratique artistique qui ont été pensées “site-specific” pour l’espace de la galerie. À travers la matérialité du verre et du marbre, Åsa Jungnelius explore des questions existentielles, chaque matériau représentant une approche technique et un état d’esprit distinct. Ce processus donne naissance à de nouvelles entités, certaines reconnaissables portant des traces d’objets quotidiens, d’autres éphémères rappelant l’anatomie corporelle. Un symbole de renaissance a été placé au cœur de l’exposition : un fragment violet brut de porphyre impérial égyptien. Les sculptures Earth / Jorden et Desire réalisées en verre coulé expriment le mouvement et la gravité de la matière, tandis qu’Åsa Jungnelius tend à explorer les limites de la matière et ce que le corps humain peut maîtriser. Ce processus physique est au centre de sa pratique artistique, telle une appropriation d’un territoire et sa transformation en objet de désir.
