Texture of Time – Monoliths
“This artist’s booklet reveals a unique collection of wooden monoliths. Recovered and saved in extremis from destruction in the old Monnet cellars in Cognac in Charente, the cedar wood used is a full-fledged player in this installation dedicated to time. Robust and noble, it no longer consolidates century-old buildings but, like a silent witness, supports the construction of memory. The lettering on the monoliths, prepared and created by hand and engraved in a specialized workshop, unveiled on each of them an extract from texts by authors, such as Proust, Heidegger or Goethe, who devoted part of their thinking to the notion of time. Each letter engraved in the monolith composes a word. Each word in turn makes up a sentence that casts its philosophical meaning when the time for exploration takes hold. At this moment, the meaning transcends the materiality of the monolith and the literary beauty is revealed. The next moment, the fragile prose hidden in the secular wood merges with the surface of the monolith to offer a texture of time.”
