Swedish sculptor and “occasional designer” Hilda Hellström explores the sensuous qualities of natural and manmade materials. By doing so, she sheds light on components that are often overlooked. Reflecting Contemplated is a multi-applicational series that conveys man’s dualistic relationship with nature; control and cohabitation. Hellström’s investigation explores how seemingly inert rocks shift, unbeknownst to onlookers. Expanding on her exploration of how man interacts with nature, the sculptor employs a sampling of inlaid stones to create wall pieces, stools and other objects that depict almost folkloric tales of this omnipresent relationship.

Finding a serene balance between solidity and malleability, Amsterdam-based duo Buro Belén developed Falling Rock in 2015. the multi-purpose furniture piece was created in various iterations employing Rose-quartz, Onyx and Quartzite with silk, velvet, and PUfabric respectively. The obvious physical polarity of hard and soft surfaces evokes larger questions about contemporary interiors. Comprising Buro Belén – Brecht Duijf and Lenneke Langenhuijsen are self-defined materializers. Their goal is to develop object-based and spatial applications that push materials to new limits while still holding fast to intuitive, emotional, and visceral aspects.

Transdisciplinary South Korean creative Mimi Jung studied at both New York’s Cooper Union and HGK Basel. Her site-specific works transcend disciplines and are intended to express personal vision through the subtlety of form and material interplays. Like a true craftsperson, Jung places less emphasis on the importance of technical results. The Neon Orange and Periwinkle Wall emulates the need for simultaneous isolation and engagement. A semi-permeable membrane divider allows one to occupy both personal and collective space.
